The millennium sculpture “Genesis” – a fantastic experience in daylight and in evening-sun.
The millennium sculpture "Genesis" by the renowned artist Finn Eirik Modahl was unveiled by King Harald V on 29 July during the millennium celebrations (2016). The sculpture is a gift to Sarpsborg from Sparebankstiftelsen DNB to the city anniversary. The artwork is based on essential aspects of Sarpsborg, the city's founder St. Olav and water. Here portrayed as a young person from the present, looking to the future and on his way out of the water. The 5 m high bust of Olav is made of mirror steel. This means that we all – the entire Sarpsborg community – can mirror ourselves into the sculpture. The sculpture reminds us that we are a modern society on the rise and forward.
The sculpture is mentioned in a book from 2021 that deals with important site-specific works in the world. Published by Thames&Hudson.
