Local tips from artist Jan-Kåre Øien

Jan-Kåre Øien is an artist, has written a book about all the artists who have visited Drøbak, and is the director of the world's only lutefisk museum in Kroketønna. Here he provides his best tips.

What made you settle in Drøbak?

I followed the "pack" to Drøbak when my family moved here in 1967. I got to know the town and the fjord. I enjoyed being here. The beautiful architecture and the surroundings by the fjord invited to many activities and interests.

Drøbak is an artist town. What should art enthusiasts experience when visiting Drøbak?

It is beautiful here with old buildings and nature. Several other artists have lived/are living and working in the town. There are several galleries to visit, and it's a short distance to Oslo.

How does a perfect day in Drøbak look like for you?

A good working day with drawing, graphics, and painting. Or just strolling around. Swimming, taking a boat trip in the western fjord with the family. Meeting good friends.

Drøbak is known for its beautiful wooden houses, and you have been actively involved in the Conservation Society in Drøbak for many years. Which streets and houses should visitors see when visiting Gamle Drøbak?

You have also illustrated many famous children's books. Do you have any tips for those visiting Drøbak with children?

Visit the aquarium, the library, the beach, go fishing for crabs, enjoy ice cream, and swim. And don't forget Follo Museum!

Go up through Bråtan, up the stairs, through Brunskogen, down Calmers vei to Sjøstjernen. Sit down and watch the sea in sunshine, wind, and storm!
